Andy Kitkowski, all-around good guy and moderator of the Story Games forum, is starting what he’s calling an RPG Bookclub for the new year. For the first “round” he’s picked Annalise. From the Story Games thread:
When: From NOW until February 15th. 6 weeks. That should be more than enough time to learn the rules and organize a session.
Details: “The (Story Games? Andy?) RPG Club”. Play at least one session of one game (more if you can/want to), then discuss the results here.
Half the effort is organizing and engaging in play. The other half is discussing with others what you did/didn’t like about the game, how your session went, etc.
STEP ONE: Locate/Purchase the game.
STEP TWO: Play the game, at least once.
STEP THREE: Start discussion of the game in a new thread.
(I imagine a single “RPG Book Club: [GAME NAME]” thread per game, where people go in and post their thoughts, before or after they actually play the game)
STEP FOUR (optional): If you had fun, keep playing.
STEP FIVE (very optional): Review the game in its own “The Game Report” (category) thread.
In addition to Annalise, Andy has also proposed a game called Metropole Luxury Coffin. It’s a free Cyberpunk setting/game by Graham MacLean.
If you have been interested in giving Annalise a shot, this is a great time to do it!

Looking for a horror game for Halloween weekend? What about two? For a limited time, you can get PDFs of both Annalise and Dread for only $18 (down from $22). Both of these games are suitable for low/no-prep pick-up-and-play gaming, and both deliver that sense of creeping horror you are looking for.
Simply click here to check out the deal, and enjoy your tales of terror!
Dread is the ENnie-award winning game of horror and suspense. In addition to it’s innovative questionnaire system of character creation, Dread’s most well-known feature is the use of a tower of blocks (such as Jenga®) to represent the tension between desire and loss at the heart of tales of the macabe. For more information: visit publisher The Impossible Dream and/or author Epidiah Ravachol.

An in-depth and wonderfully analytical review of Annalise Final Edition has been posted on the Geekbuffet blog. Some choice excepts:
Back to Annalise, a game which drowns out that silly whisper inside you with the seductive whispers of Faustian bargains carelessly struck and the anguished whimpers of tormented dreamers clinging desperately to their last shreds of humanity. The game mechanically articulates the finer points of literature without losing sight of the cheap tropes (i.e., blood-red roses, curtains blowing against a closed window, etc.) that continue to raise goosebumps.
What else can I say, other than this edition reads easily, references itself quickly and looks beautiful? Annalise exemplifies how RPGs should present themselves and how they should organize the information contained within their highly sculpted pages.
